INEC resorts to manual accreditation
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed its polling officials in Akwa Ibom to resort to manual accreditation of voters following reports of card readers malfunctioning.
The state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Austin Okojie, gave the directive on Saturday afternoon after inspecting polling units in Uyo and the environs in the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
Okojie however advised the polling officers to ensure all PVCs were verified and authenticated as INEC property.
The commissioner said that he had received the materials for the elections on time and had moved them accordingly to the registration area camps in the 31 local government areas.
Speaking on the conduct of the elections, Okojie said that INEC had done everything possible to ensure smooth exercise.
“We have done well, the only problem we have had been with the card readers.
“We have taken decision to do manual accreditation so that no voter is disenfranchised,” Okojie said.
He also directed that voting should continue till the last accredited voter regardless of the time because of hitches encountered with the card reading machines.
Speaking on the conduct of the elections, the Akwa Ibom governor, Godswill Akpabio, said that his PVC was card reader was successful.
Akpabio, who voted at 2.10pm at polling unit in Ukana Ward 2 Unit 009 in Essien Udim Local Government Area, said that his wife’s PVC could not be read by the card reader.
The governor said that he had directed that all voters on the queue be accredited manually so that all citizens would discharge their civic rights.
